In the arid landscape of Loglogo, nestled in Marsabit County, a quiet revolution has been unfolding for the past eight years, one that has empowered women, restored dignity, and transformed generations through the power of education.

For many young mothers in this community, the opportunity to attend school never existed. Married off at a young age, often to much older men these women were burdened with family responsibilities before they even learned to read or write. The idea of education was a distant dream, and for years, they struggled in silence.

They could not help their children with their homework. Filling out forms, whether for school, hospital, or government support, was intimidating. Using a mobile phone was a daily challenge. Navigating a world built on literacy while being left behind became a source of deep frustration and shame.

It was against this backdrop that RETO-AP launched the Adult Literacy School in Loglogo eight years ago, in collaboration with local leaders and education officers. The initiative was more than just a classroom; it was a lifeline. It offered young mothers a second chance: to learn, to grow, and to dream.

At first, many were hesitant. But as word spread of mothers reading their first sentence, writing their names, or confidently dialling a number on a phone, others found courage. They joined not just to gain skills, but to reclaim their voices and value in society.

The curriculum was practical and empowering, focused on literacy, numeracy, life skills, parenting, basic business knowledge, and civic understanding. The school provided a flexible schedule to accommodate domestic responsibilities. Classes were led with patience, love, and cultural sensitivity.

Over the years, the impact has been nothing short of transformational:

  • Dozens of women have now completed basic literacy levels.
  • Few of them advanced to upper primary and are even ready for the national exams (KCPE), a milestone that once seemed impossible.
  • Many can now support their children’s learning, run small businesses, read the bible, advocate for their rights, and confidently engage with institutions.

This initiative has not only empowered individuals it has lifted entire families. A literate mother is a cornerstone of an educated household. These women have become role models in their community, challenging harmful stereotypes and inspiring a new wave of learning among other marginalised groups.

The Loglogo Adult Literacy School stands today as a beacon of hope, proving that it’s never too late to learn, and never too early to change the future.
